This Week’s Earnings Watch: KR, GME, AFRM, and More

Mark’s Watchlist: Earnings Edition

1. Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR)

When the Biden admin boosted food stamp payments, it instantly landed grocery stores like Target, Walmart, and KR on my Watchlist. With earnings coming up on September 10, I’m interested to see what KR’s future outlook will look like.

I’m not dropping any cash into this name quite yet, though. I’m going to wait until earnings and then take advantage of what comes out – both as a trade and a potential investment.

2. Albertsons Companies Inc. (NYSE:ACI)

Similar to KR, ACI landed on my list last month after the Biden admin’s food stamp move. This name doesn’t report earnings until next month, but I’m keeping a close eye on it until then.

3. GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME)

While KR and ACI could be good potential investments, I’m looking at GME earnings purely through the eyes of a trader. Expected to report tomorrow after the close, GME is definitely a stock I’m going to be watching closely this week.

4. Affirm Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq:AFRM)

Although it’s not quite as infamous as GME, AFRM is another meme stock set to report earnings this week. It’s up 43% in the past month alone, and it’s reporting Thursday night for an exciting close to the week.

5. Nokia Oyj (NYSE:NOK)

NOK doesn’t report this week, but I’m watching it between now and when it does report in October. Why? Well, this stock has been on my radar for a long time. I think it’s got crazy meme stock potential – I’m talking a breakout to $7.50 or $8. And I think the anticipation building to next month’s earnings could be the catalyst it needs to take it there.

And I’m looking at the January 2022 $6 calls to play that jump.

VIX Traffic Light

This is the shape I love to see when I’m looking at the VIX futures curve:

This is a contango that’s turning our VIX traffic light a bright shade of red.

With the S&P strong, volatility has been taking it on the chin. I think the VIX could dip to 15 by Friday – and it’s going to cream UVXY and VXX.

I see UVXY falling below 20 this week, putting our $20 put deep in profitable territory.

Today’s Impact Money Trade

Gold seems like a place where money goes to die these days – yet I continue to see big option flow into it, especially with this trade on Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:GOLD):

A customer bought almost 20,000 contracts in an outright call purchase on GOLD, looking for a run into the end of the year.

This is an interesting and aggressive play, looking for almost 50% upside to get these calls in the money (ITM).

I’d much rather own the January $22 calls than these $30 calls. It’s a better value play, looking for a much smaller move in the stock.

But it’s not the only under-$1.00 play you’ll see this week…
